Under the leadership of the ECOWAS Commission, high-level regional multi-stakeholder consultations and dialogues have been initiated to provide decision-makers with useful information about mobile livestock farming in West Africa and the Sahel to make informed decisions. The idea of organising pastoralism weeks in cross-border areas was therefore put forward and made operational in 2021.
Pastoral weeks are designed as a holistic intervention approach to multi-stakeholder consultation and dialogue at the local level allowing not only to carry out several training and awareness raising activities, but above all to reach out to many stakeholders in the pacification and development of mobile livestock production systems. It is a joint initiative of ECOWAS, UEMOA and CILSS with the financial support of the French Development Agency (AFD), World Bank and GIZ.
Stakeholders at the second edition in Kebbi State, Nigeria, validated a Holistic Program for the Development of the Kado Cross-border Area which includes (i) Kebbi State, Nigera, (ii) Department of Alibori, Benin Republic and (iii) Dosso, Niger Republic.
The Common goal is to promote peace, security, and development in the three countries through the agropastoral initiative.
Date: 28 November - 01 December 2022
